A consumer forum here pulled up a mobile phone manufacturing company for selling a defective mobile handset to a customer and penalised it for the offence.
The forum directed Micromax to pay interest calculated at 12 per cent per annum from the date of purchase of the phone to customer S Biswanth of New Colony here within 30 days of the order. Besides, the forum also directed the retailer RB Store to pay Rs 5,000 as compensation to the customer.
According to the case diary, Biswanath purchased a Micromax cell phone for Rs 11,990 from RB Store at SN Plaza shopping complex here October 21, 2013. While purchasing, he failed to switch on the phone. But the retailer told him that the phone will start functioning once it is charged for 24 hours.
However, as Biswanath failed to switch on the phone despite his best efforts, he went to the shop and requested to exchange it with another handset. But the retailer refused to exchange it. Biswanath even contacted the company authorities, but in vain. Finally, he filed a complaint in the consumer forum March 25, 2014.
